Initial data was collected through the use of focus groups, questionnaires1 and interviews to obtain information on the current safety culture, systems and controls and to find out whether the company and the sites in question were ready for such an initiative. Injury and near miss records were also analysed in detail and fed back to middle management and senior boardroom executives.

Management, supervisors, operatives and contractors participated in three separate workshops detailing the underlying principles behind BBS and an outline of the BSQ process.
